A YOUTH Social Action Project is to be funded from a donation from Southeast Water’s Community Chest.
The project, which is run by Spotlight UK and will receive £2,000 from the Community Chest, will work with 10 schools across Basingstoke, Hart and Rushmore and East Hampshire to encourage students to look after their environment by carrying out a recycling campaign.
Chairman of Spotlight UK, Michaela Riley, explained the project: “We work with children from vulnerable and disadvantaged homes, and we want to run an environmental project which will help them to love their surroundings.

“It will involve carrying out research on their environment and working on a recycling project in their school and community with the ultimate aim of gaining an Environmental ASDAN certificate.”
Founded in Basingstoke in 2009, Spotlight UK is a charity that provides both free and low-cost activities for young people, with the aim of increasing their confidence and self-esteem; the charity has since expanded, with branches in Basingstoke and Deane, Reading, West Berkshire and Portsmouth.
Alongside providing activities for young people, the charity also offers an array of other services to users, including care packages for children, a job centre program, a family support service, and one-to-one mentoring and emotional support for vulnerable young people aged 7-19.
Tanya Sephton, Customer Service Director for South East Water, said: “We are delighted our Community Chest fund will be contributing to such a wonderful project for Spotlight UK.
“We are looking forward to hearing more about the results from the research they will be carrying out.”

The project is just one of the 10 good causes across the Southeast that are sharing a £20,000 bounty chosen by the freshwater supplier’s volunteer judging panel from different area of the business.
The fund is open to local community groups, charities and non-profit organisations.
Other recipients of the fund include Mereworth Community Primary School in Maidstone, which will use the money to repair the school’s wildlife fund, a project at Abbey Physic Community Garden in Faversham to install a rainwater harvesting system, and Saint Wilfred’s Hospice in Eastbourne.
