THE Tadley Treacle Fair returned to its traditional date for the first time in two years.

The fair took place on Sunday, June 5, and acted as a platform for the community to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum jubilee.

Taking place from 11am-5pm, the fair was organised by charity group Loddon Valley Lions club, who used the fair raise funds, raising over £10,000.

The money will go towards various different local charities and causes.

Loddon Valley Lions volunteer Nick Avery said that the fair “was fantastic.”

He continued: “There were families, the kids really enjoyed themselves, and everybody had a really wonderful time.”

The fair was opened by Deputy Mayor of Basingstoke, David Leeks and featured many attractions including charity and trade stands, traditional fairground games such as a Coconut Shy, and fairground rides.

Several arena shows took place throughout the day including performances by Rock Choir Newbury, Thatcham, Tadley and Hungerford and dance company Dance Phaze, as well as an falconry display by Eagle Heights Birds of Prey and a dog agility demonstration by Padworth Paws.

Other attractions included ferret racing hosted by Hants and Berks Ferret Club, a performance by Tadley Brass Band, and a circus skills workshop for children presented by Big Top Mania.

There was also a display of vintage vehicles including classic cars.

A food court, a tea tent, and a licensed bar courtesy of Calleva Football Club ensured that nobody at the fair went hungry or thirsty.

In keeping with the Jubilee celebrations, a Jubilee cake baking and decorating competition was also held, with prizes going to the first, second and third place entries in each of three age groups, under 10, 11 to 16, and 17 and over/adult.

The fair was a big success and saw thousands of attendees flock to Saunders Field in Tadley, where the event was held.

Nick said that he was also very happy that weather remained so nice over the weekend.

He explained: “We thought that we were going to get some poor weather that day, on the Sunday, but actually it held up very fair.”
