A TRUCK carrying another vehicle along a Hampshire motorway was found to be 32 per cent overweight.

Hampshire Roads Policing Unit tweeted: "This Ford Transit was seen travelling on the M27 and appeared to be struggling with the weight of the VW on the back.

"It was escorted to a weighbridge and weighed in at 32% over weight. Driver was issued with a fine."

In March a van carrying an overweight pile of bricks that were not secured safely was stopped by police on the M3.

The load was 500kg over the legal amount and officers said they were "not convinced" that rope was good enough to secure the bricks.

The driver was prohibited from continuing their journey until the load was reduced and properly secured.

Police in the New Forest have carried out several operations in a bid to catch potential fly-tippers and people driving overloaded vehicles or vehicles with insecure loads.

One two-hour session in the centre of Lyndhurst in February resulted in more than 40 vehicles being stopped.

A police spokesperson said: "Local policing teams ensured that vehicles were roadworthy and had appropriate tax, insurance and an up-to-date MoT certificate.

"In total, 45 vehicles were stopped between 7.30am and 9.30am and several fixed penalty notices were handed out to motorists for various offences."

Three tickets were issued for having an insecure load, six for driving without a seatbelt, one for having invalid insurance and one for driving without due care.
