A SCARECROW of Prime Minister Boris Johnson and ‘partygate’ has been vandalised in Old Basing.
Peter Brickell, who made it for the Old Basing village carnival committee competition, said his scarecrow has been snapped in half and the torso and the head have been taken away by “a group of young lads”.
The scarecrow was put up on June 1 in front of Peter’s house and he had posted a photo of it on a local Facebook page.
Within a few days, Peter said, the post had over 355 likes and plenty of good comments.
“On Friday night [June 10] while my wife and I were out at a dinner party, a group of young teenage lads came into the road at approximately 11.45pm, stood and had photographs taken next to it,” Peter said.
“They were then disturbed by a lorry making a delivery to which they ran off and hid for 11 minutes. Later they came back out and then literally snapped the scarecrow in half and took the top half away.
“This was captured by a neighbours CCTV. But unfortunately they were not very clear images.
“The fortunate thing is my wife and I drove home just five minutes after they’d stolen half of the mannequin. I dread to think what would’ve happened if we’d arrived while they were trying to break it in half.”
Peter said he found out since that another scarecrow in the village was also vandalised last week.
“People are now putting on Facebook that it’s not worth competing in the scarecrow competition if this sort of thing goes on,” he said.
