Hook & Newnham Basics are through to the second round of the Southern Premier League’s t20 Cup – but Basingstoke & North Hants and Hartley Wintney will both have to be content with playing in the upcoming Plate competition.
Frequent Ageas Bowl finalists in recent seasons, Hook chased down Paultons 138-7 to win by eight wickets, the Ower-based hosts losing their first three wickets for ten runs, two of them to Rupes Armstrong (3-18).
Teenage left-hander Ben Rogers smashed three sixes and ten fours in a blistering 71 which kept Paultons’ hopes alive – but it took Hook less than ten overs to race past the target.
Josh Buckingham, with 30 of his 35 runs coming in boundaries, and Oli James (31) got Hook off to a 69-run flier, leaving Harry Robson (37) and Matt Buckingham (29) to complete the formalities.
Hartley Wintney chased leather for 20 overs at Bashley, where the Premier League side piled up 235-3, with teenager Will Tripcony hitting an unbeaten 91. Sam Stroud (64) and James Trodd (45) then shared a 127-run stand
Farooq Queshi (48) and tailender Shafeh Asmat (33 not out) top scored in Hartley’s 156-9.
Some big hitting by Brad Neal (43 not out) got Basingstoke to within ten runs of Havant’s 137-7 (Ash Neal 3-31), but the cup holders were always comfortable. Neil Shelar (27) and Matt Deadman (21) made starts at the top.
