Sherfield School, in Hook, Hampshire, have been crowned the Under 14 Independent Schools Golf Association (ISGA) National Champions after a stunning performance at Radley College on Friday 17th June.
In beautiful conditions for golf, Fred Gill (age 13) and Albie Beeston (age 12), both in Year 8 at Sherfield School, produced their best rounds of the season to win the National Finals by a comprehensive margin.
Specifically, both boys carded identical rounds of 72 on the par 68 Radley course, which gave them 66 points each in the modified stableford format. With a combined total of 132, they were a full 12 points ahead of their nearest challengers in second place, Rossall School, and 20 points better than the school in third place, King’s Worcester. In addition to the team achievement, Fred and Albie also carded the lowest two gross scores of the competition with Fred winning the individual trophy by virtue of having a better back 9 holes.
"Fred and Albie have become Sherfield’s first ever ISGA National Champions and fully deserve all of the accolades and plaudits that come their way. Indeed, their performance at Radley College is a huge achievement for both Sherfield School and Hampshire Golf, for whom both boys regularly make appearances for. We are so proud of all that they have achieved this year and have certainly paved the way for further Sherfield golfing success." Mr Nick Brain, Executive Head
Over the last two seasons, Sherfield’s Golf Team have consistently competed and emerged victorious in other ISGA Competitions including the Wellington Salver at Wellington College, Junior Stableford at Sunningdale Heath and Junior Open at Drayton Park.
The competition success that the boys have experienced has not taken place by chance and has been due to countless hours spent on the range, putting green and out on the course with PGA Professionals Adam Glass and Barney Wytchard at Sherfield Oaks Golf Club. Indeed, Fred and Albie have committed to early morning and late evening sessions and battled the elements all academic year to improve their games.
"Fred and Albie have regularly produced rounds of golf to be proud of and their achievements are unrivalled amongst the number of established and respected sporting schools who are members of the ISGA. The future of Sherfield Golf has never been brighter and exciting developments are taking place in terms of our Golf Academy, Tuition and Fixture Programme next academic year." Mr Ykhlef, PE Teacher.
