A DRIVER fell asleep, swerved onto the other side of the road and crashed into an oncoming vehicle.

Delaney Foster was driving an Asda branded Mercedes Sprinter van on Bramley Road, Little London, near Tadley, when the incident occurred on November 2, last year.

Foster fell asleep at the wheel before he strayed into the other side of the ride and collided with a vehicle, causing it to spin.

The 38-year-old, of Arena Close, pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention at Basingstoke Magistrates' Court on Thursday (June 23).

Serena Edwards, prosecuting, told the court that Foster was driving the Asda van for work when he collided with the vehicle, which was being driven by Ms Odonare, who in a statement read to the court said the incident was “completely out of the blue”.

Ms Odonare said: “I was driving at 25mph and the van just appeared and swerved into my car and span it around."

Since the incident, she has been left with severe headaches and suffers from pain and anxiety every day.

Ms Edwards told the court that Ms Odonare has lost all her confidence and even “struggles to go out the house alone”.

She added: “She has constant flashbacks of the incident and said she does not know if she will ever be able to drive again.”

The court heard that when questioned by police Foster said he "fell asleep" while he was driving and "travelled onto the wrong side of the carriageway".

Representing himself in court, Foster said: "I was just really tired, and I know I should not have been driving at that time.

"I take full responsibility for what happened."

The court was told that Foster is currently disqualified from driving for 12 months after admitting to driving while more than five times the legal drink limit in December last year.

For the November offence, magistrates disqualified him from driving for nine months, which will be served concurrently to his current disqualification.

He was also handed a £120 fine, a victim surcharge of £34, and court costs of £45.
