A SPECIAL cake created by a Basingstoke baker has made it all the way to Formula One racing team McLaren for the birthday of its driver Daniel Ricciardo.
The cake made by Rachael Matthews has been cut by the Italian-Australian driver on Friday, July 1 – his 33rd birthday.
Rachael, who owns Rachycake, made the special cake in the shape of a champagne bottle and Daniel’s shoe as a tribute to his famous ‘shoey’ podium celebration.

Both the cake shoe and the cake champagne bottle were able to hold liquid which helped the F1 star to successfully perform the ultimate ‘shoey’ from the cake.
The surprise cakes were presented to Daniel at Silverstone before the British Grand Prix. McLaren shared photos and videos from the cake-cutting event.
Rachael later told the Gazette that she is a Formula One fan, and she managed to send the cake to Daniel by getting in touch with the racing team.

“I contacted them, showed them some of my works and they said that they'd love to have me make a cake.
“It was great to make a cake for Daniel – who has the biggest smile possible. He is a top guy and a very nice man. Both elements of the cake were edible. Both were able to hold the liquid and I think it's gonna be the first shoe cake that anybody has actually drank out of.”
Born and bred in Basingstoke, Rachael has been running Rachycake for 14 years.
She started baking after her mum, who always used to bring cakes for Rachel’s daughter, died 15 years ago.
“I am self-taught. I learned it all from YouTube – mostly trial and error.”

But Rachael said the technique she used to make Daniel’s cake – the one which can hold liquid – is a top-secret.
“So I can’t share any photos of making this special cake. Nobody should know how I achieved it!”
