HAMPSHIRE residents are being asked for their views on how to improve support services for people with autism.

The Hampshire Autism Partnership Board, which is a collaboration of key public services and experts by experience from Hampshire Autism Voice, is developing a new approach to help improve the lives of autistic people, as well as those who support them.

Margaret White, co-chair of the Autism Partnership Board, said: “Hampshire Autism Voice members and all Autism Board partners have co-produced this questionnaire for Hampshire. We encourage autistic people, their families, friends and anyone with an interest to contribute their views towards this strategy which aims to support and enhance the lives of autistic people of any age in Hampshire. We look forward to receiving people’s views on this important piece of work.”

They will be based around six clear priorities:

  • improving understanding and acceptance of autism within society 
  • improving autistic children and young people’s access to education, and supporting positive transitions into adulthood
  • supporting more autistic people into employment 
  • tackling health and care inequalities for autistic people 
  • building the right support in the community and supporting people in inpatient care
  • improving support within the criminal and youth justice systems. 

These priorities reflect the key aims of Government’s National Autism Strategy published in July 2021.

Cllr Fran Carpenter, co-chair of the Hampshire Autism Partnership Board, added: “Securing help and support for those with autism can sometimes feel fragmented, particularly around the crucial years from teenager to young adult. Our aim is to develop a single ‘all age’ approach that feels joined up, better supporting those with autism to lead rewarding and fulfilling lives.”

The Hampshire Autism Partnership Board comprises representatives from Health and social care, Department for Work and Pensions, Police, voluntary services, as well as those who use services and their families and carers.
