THE weekend did not go well for local bowling teams with defeats for both Oakley and Basingstoke clubs.
Playing at Southampton in their first ever semi final in the Hampshire Mixed Top Club Competition, Oakley began well by picking up the first of the five points on offer with a convincing win for Ashley Nethercliffe in the men’s singles.
With Alice Lovett leading in the women’s singles and the Triples also in front, a win was on the cards. But opponents Fareham dug in and, with narrow wins in all four remaining disciplines, triumphed 4-1.

Basingstoke Town were no more successful in the final of Basingstoke and District’s Hants and Berks Cup as they lost to the holders Alton Social by 60 shots to 48.
In the leagues, unbeaten Kingsclere have already secured the title in Division 1 of the District Mens Triples and are engaged in a three way battle with Alton Social and Oakley for the Fours league title.
The Whitchurch League is also coming to a conclusion. Littleton Leopards have been crowned Champions of Division 1 with Basingstoke Jesters and Kingsclere Partriges relegated.
It has, however been an excellent season for Howard Park with their Merlins winning Division 2 and their Kestrels Division 3.
Old Basing Royalists made it a triple for local clubs by winning Division 4. The Stan Hardman Mixed Triples League is played in a different format and has reached the stage where the winners and runners up from each Division play off against teams from other Divisions.
This sees Basingstoke Town taking on Whitchurch and Howard Park Saints playing Alton Social.

Basingstoke District competitions are also coming to a conclusion and Old Basing are having a particularly good season, in the year they provide the District President.
With the finals being held on the President’s green they will be represented in four of the eight competitions.
