ALASTAIR Brown was Basingstoke and North Hants’ hero, as his first five-wicket haul for the club helped them to victory over Andover in the 70th final of Guy Jewell Cup, writes Graham Merry.

It also earned the 18-year-old the man-of-the-match award as his four-over spell which conceded just 13 runs turned the game on its head.

Andover had won the toss and showed their intent from the opening ball of the 20-over contest, which Kullem Watta (12) sent to the sightscreen for six.

He may have departed in the third over, but Sam Ashman (28) and Babu Veetil (25) then took up the mantle with some big hitting, taking the score to 72-1 after eight overs.

Brown then stopped Andover in their tracks as in one over he dismissed both Ashman and Veetil.

The teenager then struck again to remove Nathan Birks (8), thanks to a great forward diving catch from Joe Oates, leaving Andover on 84-4 and from here they slumped to 94-9 as Brown took two further wickets and Greg Donaldson chipped in with three of his own for just 12 runs.

The best one being when he caught and bowled Angus McMahon which earned the Basingstoke player the Magic Moment award.

After this final pair Rowan Duckworth (16 not out) and Harry Clarke (8) dug in and moved the score to 119, before Clarke was caught behind by Richard Vinn to give Matt Donaldson his second wicket of the game.

The Bountymen’s reply got off to a good start as Lawrence Benge hit a quick fire 24, which included one six and four fours.

Despite the loss of Dean Nurse (5) - one of two victims for Morgan Vanandel - Basingstoke’s Matt Deadman (26) and Joe Oates then moved the score onto 70.

By the time the next wicket of Brad Neal (7) fell, Basingstoke were now only 30 runs away from victory.

Neil Shelar (14) produced a nice cameo innings of three fours and it was left to Oates (28 not out) and Greg Donaldson who secured the five wicket win with a boundary.

In the earlier game at May’s Bounty, East Woodhay won the Cyril Thompson Trophy in a one sided affair as they won by 53 runs over Aldermaston Rugby.

The winners batted first and Ben Hummel hit 13 fours in a fine innings of 86, as East Woodhay made 182-5 from 20 overs.

He was well supported by Adam Barnes (23) and Joe Lawrence (32).

In reply, Aldermaston scored 129-7 with AK Sankaranarayanan top scoring with an unbeaten 33, while opener Rakitha Perera scored 20.

Hummel’s knock in the Trophy final earned him the Mary Jewell batting award with a total of 172 runs this summer.

Oakley’s Dan Sumner picked up the Guy Jewell bowling award for taking eight wickets.
