PLANS for a new home in St Mary Bourne have been given the go ahead, despite concerns from residents.

Deborah Richards submitted the application to demolish Gangbridge House Cottage, in Gangbridge Lane, to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.

A replacement dwelling will be built on the site, with the plans modified as an earlier design was denied for being too large for the plot.

The application faced some opposition from residents as the house is located in a conservation area and is next to a grade two-listed property.

Residents also had concerns that the replacement dwelling would still be too large for the plot and would disrupt views.

At a meeting of the council's development control committee on Wednesday, September 28, members debated whether the proposal should be granted approval.

Speaking on behalf of residents, Cllr Samuel Carr said: “Residents accept that the cottage will be redeveloped, but they are clear that the current proposal is too large and too inappropriate for its context.

“Our case is that this scheme conflicts with our policy EM11 on heritage, breaches protections afforded by the St Mary Bourne conservation area, and would detrimentally impact the protected landscapes of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.”

Despite the concerns, committee members voted to approve the application.
