THE Gazette has been informed that Deliveroo and Just Eat drivers are expected to strike over the weekend.

Drivers who deliver takeaways across Basingstoke are reportedly due to strike at Basingstoke Leisure Park on Saturday, October 8.

Celon Butcher, who owns Global Kitchen Catering and Events in Basingstoke, has told the Gazette that several Deliveroo and Just Eat drivers have told him they will be striking at the park this weekend.

He said: "Drivers are telling me there is a big disgrunt at the moment on the Just Eat and Deliveroo network and from a restaurant perspective it is incredibly harmful."

Celon was told by drivers that at least 170 drivers are expected to strike.

Meanwhile, an anonymous email sent to the Gazette read: "Basingstoke will be the next city in England to paralyze with the delivery drivers strike. This strike compared to other cities will have a much larger proportion, the estimate is that Basingstoke has around 180 drivers working on Uber Eats , Just Eat and Deliveroo app and around 130 have already confirmed their adherence to the stoppage.

"The intention of the movement is to claim improvements in the treatment given to us by the other partners and by the application support, as well as an increase in the value of the fees received waiting time at partner restaurants and fair payment for miles driven."

A Deliveroo spokesperson said:“Deliveroo is proud to offer flexible work to more than 90,000 self-employed riders across the UK and, in Basingstoke, the majority of riders - over 75% - say they are satisfied with riding for Deliveroo.

"Our way of working is designed around what riders tell us matters to them most - flexibility - with riders paid for each delivery they choose to complete and they always earn more than the national minimum wage while working with us. In most cases, riders earn significantly more than this.

"We also have a dedicated rider team in place who are on hand to help riders with any concerns they have and make sure they feel supported at all times.”

Just Eat have been contacted but they have not commented.
