A PAIR of Basingstoke men have constructed a working model classic car that they will raffle off for charity.

Basingstoke Classic Car Club members Tony Jones and Perry Beckett have constructed a working, battery powered toy classic car, large enough for a little one to drive around in.

The men are planning to raffle off the car to help raise funds for children's hospices Naomi House and Jacksplace.

The car will be displayed at the Basingstoke Classic Car Club meeting on October 12 before being raffled at the following club meeting on Wednesday, November 9.

Basingstoke Gazette: Tony said that he and Perry originally wanted to create the car for fun before deciding to us it as an excuse to raise money for charity.

He continued: “We were sat talking one day and thought ‘well, how can we do this and do some good at the same time’.

“So, we thought of the charity, and because it was child’s car that we were building, obviously a children’s charity was the focus of our attention, and one that stands out in this area is Naomi House.”

The men have constructed the car from range of readily available materials.

The chassis is constructed from wood, while the bonnet is made from a wheelie bin, the mudguards from washing up bowls, and the grill part of a garden sieve.

Basingstoke Gazette: Meanwhile, the engine has been taken from a cordless drill.

The car can go from 0-3mph in 3.5 seconds and can cruise for about an hour on one charge.

Tony said: “It’s been built to a sturdy, safe, well-proven plan.”

To enter the raffle to win the car, simply donate to the pair’s JustGiving before the raffle draw on November 9.

A raffle number will be allocated for every £1 donated, and if the winner does not wish to receive the car, it will instead be donated to Naomi House alongside all money raised.

At time of writing, Tony and Perry have managed to raise £247 of their £500 goal.

Basingstoke Gazette: Tony said that he and Perry were “grateful” to those who had donated and entered the raffle, calling it “a wonderful cause”.

Naomi House and Jacksplace are hospices supporting life limited and life threatened children and young adults from Hampshire, Wiltshere, Berkshere, Dorset, the Isle of Wight and beyond.
