A HOST of events are being held in Basingstoke to celebrate Black History Month which runs throughout October.

Organised by the Cultural Diversity Consortium (CDC), the month-long programme of events is designed to engage, educate and empower as well as celebrate culture and heritage.

The celebrations kicked off at St Bede’s Church, in Popley, on October 9, with an event organised by Basingstoke African Caribbean Catholic Association.

Another event planned for the month includes a Black History Month Celebration Event at Popley Fields Community Centre on October 15 from 6.30pm to 11.30pm with music from DJ Marvin Rose and steel band Caribbean Express, and Caribbean food provided by CJC.

CDC is made up of a coalition of groups from across Basingstoke including Basingstoke Hindu Society, Basingstoke Unites Against Racism, and Basingstoke Caribbean Society and Friends.

Information on its website says that during Black History Month it will debate to “find solutions to the issues and challenges that affect our communities in a constructive and balanced way.

“Our focus is on representing the interests of the African Caribbean communities in Basingstoke. Building and strengthening our community through engagement, advocacy and a showcase of culture are the tools we use to illuminate the beauty of our heritage and contributions.”

The group engages with leaders, public organisations and communities to “help define a clear pathway to achieving real community cohesion and recognition of black contributions”.
