A BASINGSTOKE man has been arrested following a report of a serious assault on a woman walking her dog.
According to police, the incident happened at around 10.15pm on Wednesday, October 12.
Officers investigating the case said the woman in her 70s was walking her dog along Eastrop Lane, near Goat Lane, when a man approached her from the Eastfield Avenue alleyway.
A Hampshire Constabulary spokesperson said: "It is alleged that the man hit the woman over the head with an unknown object. The man then ran away from the scene.
"The woman was taken to Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, where she is being treated for a serious head injury."
Officers have launched an investigation and have arrested a 25-year-old man from Basingstoke on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent.

He remains in custody, while police enquiries are ongoing.
A Hampshire Constabulary spokesperson continued: "We are keen to hear from any witnesses who saw this incident take place. Were you in the area at the time? Did you witness the incident?
"Officers believe a number of cars were in the area at the time. Do you have any dash-cam footage or CCTV images that may help our investigation?"
