Basingstoke Ladies 1s secured a brilliant win, while Basingstoke Men’s 1s suffered another defeat.
Ladies 1s, sponsored by KJ Smith Solicitors, were at home to Bristol Firebrands Ladies 1s this week.
Basingstoke came out determined to put a first-class performance and started well, winning a streak of short corners which were well-defended by Firebrands.
Basingstoke’s defence worked hard to keep out any Firebrand attacks with goal-keeper Gemma Carswell making some fine saves.
The pressure paid off in the third quarter, when Claire Bowman smashed home a rebound from a penalty corner.
Basingstoke kept the pressure on and pressed hard to finish the game 1-0, taking a well-deserved three points. They look forward to taking the momentum into next weekend when they face Isca and Exeter University away.
Basingstoke Men’s 1s resumed their league against Reading Men’s 2s at home. It was a close battle throughout until Reading broke the deadlock in the last ten minutes to win the game 0-1. Next week, Basingstoke travel to face Marlow Men’s 1s at 4.30pm.
Basingstoke Ladies 2s faced unbeaten Marlow Ladies 2s this week.
Marlow put the pressure on early, which Basingstoke started to soak up until a break led to the first goal for Marlow. Basingstoke continued to press on, however, Marlow’s quick forwards were able to put 2 more passed Basingstoke, putting them 3-0 up.
Basingstoke did not let their heads drop and earnt a penalty corner which Gilly Dunning converted to make it 1-3.
Basingstoke continued to build their play and a strike from Jess Pritchard brought it back to 2-3 at halftime. Basingstoke came out strongly in the second half, earning a few penalty corners. However, they could not get through the Marlow defence and were caught on the break late in the game, with the score ending 2-5.
Basingstoke Men’s 2s lost 0-2 away to Andover Men’s 1s. Basingstoke Ladies 3s suffered a 1-4 defeat away to Bournemouth Ladies 3s.
Basingstoke Men’s 3s drew 3-3 against Weymouth Men’s 1s, with two goals for Chris Garret and one for Eliot Boyd. Basingstoke Ladies 4s earnt a hard-fought three points against Portsmouth Ladies 2s, winning 2-1.
Basingstoke Men’s 4s lost 1-2 against Trojans Men’s 5s. Basingstoke Ladies 5s had a superb 5-0 win against Haslemere Ladies 5s.
Basingstoke Men’s 5s continued a promising run with a 3-1 win at home against fellow promo-tees Portsmouth 4s in the South Central Solent - Div1. After sustaining what turned out to be a three-break broken thumb in the first half, forward Chris Harman scored from a penalty corner and then in open play.
Portsmouth finally broke down Basingstoke’s press to make it to 2-1 close to the end. Basingstoke then won a penalty corner just before the final whistle which Steve Baron converted a far post for a 3-1 win.
Basingstoke Men’s 6s suffered a 1-9 loss against Haslemere. Basingstoke Ladies 6s lost 1-4 against Haslemere Ladies 4s.
Next week, the Men’s 2s are at home against Chichester at 11 45am, followed by the Ladies 2s against Milton Keynes. Also at home are the Ladies 3s, Men’s 3s & 4s, as well as Men’s and Ladies 6s.
