A BASINGSTOKE driving instructor will take part in BBC Children in Need’s Big Learner Relay on Wednesday.

The annual event involves hundreds of driving instructors and pupils raising money for BBC Children in Need.

The fundraiser involves relaying a Pudsey top box – the kind that instructors use to advertise on top of their cars - from one driving lesson to the next, over 3,000 miles around the UK in just 12 days, beginning in Aberdeen to Goodwood motor circuit.

Barry Davis, who has been a driving instructor for six years, will take part in the relay on November 16 from Lasham to Camberley.

Mercury Driving School, who Barry works for, decided to take part in the relay after many years of doing Christmas Jumper Day for Save the Children.

“This year is the first year as a company that we have got involved but we are always doing something for charity,” Barry said.

“We wanted to be involved in something a bit bigger and touches more people and the relay fills that.”

On Wednesday, Barry’s student from Odiham will be part of the convoy of people taking part in this stretch of relay.

“We are really excited to be part of the relay, it really feels like we are part of something bigger, a bigger goal, and helping more people.”

Ahead of the event, companies in Basingstoke and learners have been sponsoring spots which have been put on Barry’s car replicating those on Pudsey’s eyepatch.

He will be joined by other instructors from Mercury Driving School who will take part in the leg.

The convoy will leave Avenue Nurseries Garden Centre, Avenue Road, Lasham, at 1pm.
