A SEXOLOGIST and relationship psychotherapist from Basingstoke has published a guide to help couples transform their intimate experiences and break down taboos around sex.

Author Silva Neves has created Sexology as an accessible guide to modern sex and relationships, with clear and jargon-free information suitable for the general public and health care professionals.

The 43-year-old, whose latest book has been published by Routledge, said: “We need to develop a greater understanding of sexology as a nation. Sex education is poor in schools and sexology does not feature in any professional training of the patient-facing professions: GPs, nurses, care staff, coaches, and psychotherapists.

“The result is perpetuating taboos and misinformation around sex. I wrote this book to fill in these gaps of knowledge. Sexology serves to highlight sexual diversity and normalise our sexual behaviours and fetishes.”

Silva, who works with individuals and couples presenting with a wide range of sex and relationship issues, is also author of Compulsive Sexual Behaviours and A Psycho-Sexual Treatment Guide for Clinicians.

Of his latest book, published in November, he said: “This book is an odyssey into what is central to people’s lives: their sexuality, their intimate relationships, love, and living a fulfilled life.

“The essence of sexology is the pulsing heart of the joyous pleasure of being human. It will answer all the questions about sex and relationships you have always wanted to know and never dared ask.”

Silva believes that his book will “support a healthy sex life” adding: “Good sex is an important part of our overall health, it enhances our wellbeing and underpins our intimate relationships. But it isn’t possible without greater understanding and consideration of all of the factors that are currently at play.”
