A BASINGSTOKE councillor has expressed concerns about some delivery riders accessing pedestrian and cycle routes, and thus endangering lives.

Cllr Arun Mummalaneni said delivery riders must stop this practice of using motorbikes on footpaths to ensure the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.

“Since they are self-employed, there is nobody to complain to,” said the Basingstoke and Deane borough councillor for Brookvale and Kings Furlong ward.

“I request that they take social responsibility to drive considerately. Though police are doing their best to address this anti-social behavior, their priorities and limited resources mean it is not possible to enforce these at every incident.

“There are preventive barriers on some footpaths in town centre. However, delivery drivers are still unconcerned. Delivery drivers must consider those who walk on footpaths as people deserve to feel secure. I request the delivery drivers to take moral responsibilities rather than cutting corners to make quick money.”

Cllr Mummalaneni, who is also a Hampshire county councillor, said he has sympathy for the delivery drivers during this cost-of-living crisis, but they are putting children and elderly residents at risk.

“There is no doubt that drivers are providing essential services and doing a great job. Although these self-employed workers are trying to feed their families, I am aware that they put our children at risk by riding through footpaths. It is unacceptable.

“I also urge all residents to report to police if they happen to witness any such violations of delivery drivers using the road.”
