Chief Superintendent Darren O’Callaghan, head of the Joint Operations Unit for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary and Thames Valley Police, said: "As we head into the festive season, we know that across our communities people will be out celebrating with friends and family, visiting markets and shopping for gifts.
"Each year, officers from our armed response and local policing teams carry out patrols in the areas we know see some of the highest footfall, and this year will be no different.

"These armed and unarmed patrols are not in response to any specific threat, and we do not want people to be alarmed when they do see these officers while out.
"I would encourage people to continue to be vigilant, and if you do see any behaviour or activity that feels suspicious to you, then please report this to us
"You can do this in confidence by calling 0800 789 321, or online by going to act.campaign.gov.uk/. In an emergency, always call 999."
