A BEAUTY salon in Basingstoke was on fire this morning, which firefighters say was caused by a tumble dryer.

The incident happened in the early hours of the morning on Friday, January 20 on Moorhams Avenue.

Firefighters from Basingstoke Fire Station were called to the scene to find a fire inside a beauty salon.

A spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews from Basingstoke Fire Station were alerted to a blaze at a beauty salon on Moorhams Avenue shortly after 3am. 

"The building was heavily smoke logged and had an alarm sounding when firefighters arrived. 

"The fire involving a tumble dryer in the staff room was extinguished by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and using hose reels and jets.

"Ventilation fans were used to clear smoke from the building before HIWFRS returned to the station shortly after 4am.".

They also took to Twitter to share the news with residents.

They posted: "H01P8 mobilised alongside H01P6, H01P7 and H01A1 also from @Basingstoke_01 to reports of a commercial fire. On arrival, smoke issuing. 4x BA, 2x HRJ and PPV were used to extinguish. Fire involving a tumble dryer and towels within a staff room of a beauty salon. 

"crews used Firefighter Decon to remove and clean BA sets, change into clean fire kit and had showers before returning to home addresses at 05:30. Firefighter decon is hugely important for the modern-day firefighter"
