A CAFÉ and bakehouse in Festival Place has been issued a one-star rating for its hygiene.
Granary Bakehouse and Café was visited by food safety officers from Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council on January 4, who said ‘major improvement’ is needed for hygiene standards.
It is the third borough establishment to have been dealt a blow with a one-star hygiene rating this year.

Spices and Spirits, in Kings Furlong, and Spicy Tadka, in Festival Place, were both also given one-star ratings following inspections in January.
The café, which sells a selection of freshly made sandwiches and cakes, was told that ‘major improvement’ is needed for the management of food safety, which includes systems of checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, and evidence that staff know about food safety.
The cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building were deemed to be ‘generally satisfactory’.
However, inspectors said hygienic food handling, which includes preparation, cooking, re-heating and storage, needed improvement.
Inspectors considered the hand washing facilities, pest control and storage.
