THE COUNTY council has funded a free holiday scheme over Easter break to help low-income and vulnerable families facing additional pressures.
Hampshire County Council (HCC) has organised a programme of activities and healthy meals during the school holidays at 132 venues.
As part of its Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, HCC has used funding from the Department for Education to help families, primarily for children who receive income-based free school meals during term time.
Cllr Edward Heron, HCC's executive lead member for children’s services, said: “In recent years, the HAF programme has become a cornerstone of our support for low-income families during school holidays.

"I’d like to thank our providers who do a fantastic job – combining fun, food, exercise and education while offering experiences that otherwise may be out of the reach of vulnerable children, such as learning to ride a bike, visiting the theatre or swimming.
“High food prices and growing children can put a strain on any household budget, felt most keenly by those on the lowest incomes.
Cllr Heron urged eligible parents and carers to register for these free clubs, so that their children can enjoy a hot meal, learn new skills and burn off some energy in a warm and supportive environment.

In total, the council has awarded almost £600,000 to 51 organisations to create 17,131 places at HAF sessions this Easter.
The upcoming Easter itinerary follows a successful Christmas programme, which provided holiday clubs across 125 sites.

Some HAF providers also offer paid-for places at their sites for families not eligible for the free places.
Families can get additional help with paying for childcare places through the Government’s Childcare Choices schemes.
Parents of children from Year R to 16 wishing to find out if they are eligible can check through the council's Free School Meals checker.
