SMOKE was seen 'bellowing out' of a children's bedroom window following an alleged stabbing, a court has heard.

As previously reported, Kyle Butler, 28, from Cannon Close, Ellisfield, has gone on trial at Winchester Crown Court accused of attempted murder and wounding with intent.

Police officers were called to an address in Butler Close in Basingstoke at 6.34am on Friday, June 24, last year. They found a woman in her 20s with non-life-threatening injuries.

During the trial's opening, the court heard that Butler set fire to his ex-partner's home and allegedly stabbed her with a knife three times. There were also young children in the home at the time of the incident.

On Wednesday, March 29, the court was shown bodycam footage recorded by PC Robert Davies and PC James Pawley who attended the address and described the scene as "distressing".

PC Davies said: "As I approached the bedroom I could see that the defendant and a female were on the bed facing me so I stopped just in the doorway.

"His right hand was held up towards the right-hand side of her neck. His hand appeared to be held quite tidily around her neck."

He went on to say she was "absolutely terrified".

Prosecutor Kerry Maylin asked what happened in the bedroom.

PC Davies continued: "I stepped forward and took aim with my taser and I fired at the larger body mass of the male that I could see.

"At this point, my recollection is that many things happened at once, in particular, the male started to move his right hand around and aimed the knife towards the female's upper body. As I was discharging the taser he started to stab at or towards the victim."

PC Davies described the fire at the property as "considerate, strong and uncontrollable".

Butler's sister Alesha Butler also gave her evidence and said his ex-partner had called her after the alleged stabbing.

Defending, Benn Maguire asked her about the phone call.

Ms Butler said: "She was chuckling about it, telling me how the police had gone in and tasered him. She was acting like it was a big game on the phone, there is no way that anyone would laugh at a situation like that."

Mr Maguire asked if Butler's ex-partner had said anything about him trying to kill her. Ms Butler answered no.

The court also heard from Sarah Griffith, Butler's ex-partner's aunt-in-law who told the court she saw "smoke bellowing out the babies' bedroom" when she arrived at the address.

The trial continues.
