RESIDENTS and staff at a Basingstoke care home have been competing in an Easter cake competition.

At Ashcombe House, in Worting Road, residents are taking part in Barchester Healthcare's Easter competition with the hopes of creating the cake with the winning design.

They are one of 250 care homes and hospitals that are taking part across the country.

Excitement is running high as chefs and residents at each of the homes put their heads together and aprons on to create a cake that represents the themes and flavours of Easter.

Louise Lambert, general manager at Ashcombe, said: “We’ve all had such a brilliant time taking part in this competition, it has been such fun.

"It has been a real collaborative process - thinking about the ingredients and the design. Not to mention all the delicious different versions we have had to taste over the last few weeks, it really has been no hardship.”

Sally Chivers, a resident at Ashcombe House added that everyone "wanted to get involved in the competition".

She said: "We had such a giggle coming up with the design and deciding what ingredients should go in. I definitely think we’ve got a winning recipe. We can’t wait to find out what the judges think of our entry!”

Judging will take place after Easter and the winner will be announced at the end of April.

The aim of this competition was to keep residents active and to provide a choice of engaging physical and mental activities tailored to their interests.
