DASHCAM footage captured shows the moment a reckless driver turned off a roundabout into a lane of oncoming traffic.

The driver of a blue Mazda caused the near-miss when they pulled out of a busy roundabout on the A3013 near Ancells Farm in Hampshire on February 8 into the wrong lane.

Iain Martin, who filmed the incident on his Nextbase 522GW dash cam, was about to drive into the roundabout but was luckily driving slow enough to stop before hitting the car, despite it being a 40mph area.

The blue Mazda also came to a complete halt after exiting the roundabout at some speed.

Martin said the incident shocked him but he did not call the police as he said they had “enough on their plate”.

He said: “No damage was done to either car, no injuries were sustained to either vehicle occupants.  Apart from a scare and thinking the bloke in the other car, who was in the wrong, was a complete PRAT, what was there to resolve?”

Martin said he approached the roundabout doing about 23mph, which allowed him to stop in time. A white car ahead of him obscured his view of the blue Mazda.

He continued: “The position of the white car in front, and my position to the right but behind the white car in front of me, obscured my view of the oncoming blue vehicle, which had approached from the Cove Road on the wrong side of the island leading up to the roundabout. This car then travelled around the roundabout in the wrong direction and then proceeded to exit the roundabout into our lane, into oncoming traffic, ie towards me.

“[I was] finally glad to have not been in an accident, either from the blue car not smashing into the front of my vehicle, or from the vehicle travelling behind me not having gone into the back of my vehicle.”

He said his initial sense of shock turned into “amazement - as to how anyone could pull off such a stupid manoeuvre.”

Bryn Brooker, Head of Road Safety at Nextbase, added: “This near-miss could have easily been a nasty crash. Thankfully the driver of the recording car was going slow enough to stop before hitting the reckless driver on the wrong side of the road.

"You always have to expect the unexpected on the roads – you might be doing everything perfectly, but another driver can still do stupid things that put everyone’s lives in danger.

“Dash cams are an asset for moments like this. In the event of a collision, not only does the driver have evidence that they are not at fault, but also a clear recollection of what vehicles were involved, how the incident unfolded and confidence in resolving the case so they are not left to foot the bill for damages to their vehicle. This can also save thousands of pounds in no-claims bonuses on car insurance.”
