A CALL from organisers of King Charles’s Coronation for members of the public to swear allegiance to the monarch has prompted widespread reactions.
King Charles’s Coronation is due to take place on Saturday, May 6 and will include the first Homage of the People – an addition to the ancient ceremony which aims to see people across the UK and overseas realms swear an oath of allegiance to Charles.
During the service, the Archbishop of Canterbury will invite the public to pledge allegiance to the new monarch.
The proposed oath to the King has caused positive reactions in Basingstoke.
Basingstoke residents expressed they were more than happy to pledge allegiance to the King, which is a very different reaction to Winchester residents who felt the concept of a pledge was unfamiliar to them.
The Gazette spoke to people in the town to ask their views.
Basingstoke resident, Tom Gilvear, said: "Even though it still feels weird to me saying god save the King rather than Queen, it is a very exciting time and I am very happy to pledge my allegiance to the King, just as I have with past monarchs."
Molly Bearley, from Basingstoke, also said: "Times are changing and I feel things are changing for the better. I think he will do a lot for our country, so I would be more than happy to pledge allegiance to our King."
Jo Kelly, from Basingstoke, added: "When I see other countries who just have a president, I believe we are better off. When we do things in the UK, we do it properly."
