A NEW cycling event is set to take place later this month, with three routes for riders to take on.
The Popham Pedal is due to be held on Sunday, May 14, to raise money for Overton Sheepfair.
All routes begin and end at Popham Airfield, situated to the south west of Basingstoke near Junction 8 of the M3.
The event caters to cyclists of all levels of experience, with a 15-mile route aimed at families and novice cyclists, while more experienced riders can choose between a 40-mile or 60-mile route.
Each route will feature a refreshment stop, complete with drinks and home-baked cakes. And for added safety and peace of mind, marshals will be on hand to help at road crossings, while support vehicles will include a mobile mechanic.

The 15-mile route starts by heading northwards from the airfield, initially towards Ashe Warren, then to Oakley before returning via Steventon, the birthplace of Jane Austen.
Designed with families and less regular cyclists in mind, this route does feature a few uphill stretches, but nothing too strenuous.
The 40-mile route, on the other hand, mostly heads south and east of the airfield, starting with Steventon and North Waltham, before taking in Axford, Medstead, Bighton, Alresford and Kings Worthy.
For those looking for a greater challenge, the 60-mile route is the one to choose. This route starts by heading northwards to Hannington, where cyclists will be warmed up with a hill before heading back downhill and rejoining the 15-mile route for a few miles.

From North Waltham, the route will then go south-east to Axford, Bradley and other small villages, before returning via Medstead, Bighton, Alresford and Kings Worthy.
Entry costs just £20 for adults and £5 for children, with all proceeds going to the Overton Sheepfair, which takes place every fourth year, with the next one scheduled for 2024.
So whether you're an experienced cyclist or just looking for a fun day out with the family, be sure to check out this exciting new event! For more information and entry forms, head to pophampedal.org.uk.
