A FUNDRAISING event to support the victims of a major apartment block fire in Basingstoke has been organised.

The Oak pub, in Oakridge Road, has organised the event to take place on Saturday, June 10 to raise money for the 24 families displaced by the fire on May 27.

More than 80 firefighters tackled the blaze at the block in Oakridge Road at around 3pm on Saturday, May 27, forcing dozens of people to evacuate their homes.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service’s fire investigation team has said that the cause of the fire was an electrical fault. 

Many families whose apartments were destroyed in the fire are still living in hotel rooms and the fundraiser has been organised to support them.

The event will be held on The Green between 12pm and 9pm with various attractions including a bouncy castle, ice cream van, funfair, barbecue and hog roast.

There will also be live music and Irish dancing.

Many Basingstoke businesses have donated raffle and tombola prizes for the event, while stall holders will be charged £15 per table with all proceeds donated to the displaced families.
