BASINGSTOKE Symphony Orchestra will round off its 2022/23 season with a superb programme later this month.
On Saturday, June 24, the orchestra will return to The Anvil for its Sounds of Summer concert.
Billed as a “great evening of classical music”, the programme includes Bernstein’s Overture Candide, Arnold’s Little Suite No.2 and Elgar’s Enigma Variations, along with renowned soloist Clare Howick performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concert in D Major.
Clare, who grew up in a musical environment, said her parents are keen recreational musicians, which spurred her on to start learning the violin at aged six.

She said: “When I was 12 I was influenced by playing to Hugh Bean when I won the Hugh Bean Violin Competition at the Royal College of Music. At around the same time I played in a masterclass to Dorothy DeLay (teacher of Itzhak Perlman), and she invited me to study with her at the Julliard, though it would have meant my family moving to New York. All this encouraged me to pursue becoming a soloist and my first professional engagement was at the age of 14, performing the Four Seasons at Waldegrave House, Strawberry Hill.”
Aside from performing at the Sounds of Summer concert Clare is recording a filmic solo violin CD with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
Sounds of Summer begins at 7.30pm. To buy tickets, go to anvilarts.org.uk/whats-on/event/basingstoke-symphony-orchestra-sounds-of-summer.
