FIVE pupils from Basingstoke and Mid Hants Athletics Club have come away with remarkable success at the Hampshire schools athletics association track & field championships.

The competition, held under scorching conditions last Saturday, June 10, at the Mountbatten Athletics Centre in Portsmouth, saw the young athletes deliver outstanding performances.

In the junior girls' category, Daisy Allford, a student at Sherfield School, demonstrated her tactical prowess by executing two superb races.

Despite the sweltering heat during the morning heats, Allford exerted just enough effort to comfortably secure a spot in the final, finishing first in her heat.

In the cooler afternoon conditions of the final, she skillfully positioned herself among the frontrunners for the first 600m before unleashing a powerful sprint towards victory.

Allford crossed the finish line with a commanding lead of well over two seconds.

Her exceptional achievement not only earned her a place representing Hampshire in the upcoming inter county competition, where she will compete against Surrey, Sussex, and Kent, but also secured an invitation to represent Hampshire in the English schools championships at the Birmingham Alexander Stadium later this month.

Allford's coach, Dave Ragan said: "Huge congratulations to Daisy. This is the highest level competition you can reach at this age group in athletics, apparently it’s the 4th largest track & field event in the world. Great experience against the very best.”

In the junior boys' discus event, Georgie Hedderly kept spectators on edge until his very last throw.

With a distance of 36.27m, the Brighton Hill school pupil secured second place in a nail-biting finish. His impressive performance booked his place in the inter counties at Down Grange and a well-deserved spot on the Hampshire team bus to the Birmingham Alexander Stadium.

His coach, Pete Bolton, said: "He works hard in the strength & conditioning element of his training & he sets his own targets & has achieved everyone this year. I have a great deal of respect for Georgie because of his focus & commitment to his chosen sport.”

Other Basingstoke pupils who achieved notable success at the championships include Denaya Guma from Bishop Challoner's, who clinched gold in the junior girls' 75m hurdles with a personal best time of 12.5 seconds.

Ethan Easton, a student at Cranbourne School, soared to victory in the junior boys' long jump with an impressive distance of 5.23m.

Treyvon Hull, a student at QMC, secured silver medals in both the senior boys' 100m and 200m races.

They all will represent Hampshire in the upcoming inter counties competition.
