Two other charges were put to McDonald which relate to the same incident. It is alleged that the 61-year-old had a knife in a public and private place and unlawfully and intentionally threatened the same man with the knife.
He pleaded not guilty to all charges.
A trial date has been set for November 21 at the same court.
McDonald will be on conditional bail until the trial starts.
