In Basingstoke Town's first home game of the season, they welcomed an experienced Hanwell Town on Saturday, August 12.
'Stoke came off the back of an opening draw against Tiverton and were hoping to hit the ground running with their first home game in the Southern League Premier South.
As the game kicked off, ‘Stoke looked impressive with a couple of early chances but these were cancelled out when Hanwell took the lead from a corner in eight minutes.
Hanwell then doubled their lead in the 33rd minute with a simple tap-in after a great save from Mark Scott.
In quick succession, Hanwell got their third of the game with a superb freekick from close range.
After half time, the game looked dead and buried with the ‘Stoke players frustrated with their poor finishing.
In extra time, 96th minute, Dan Rowe scored a consolation goal to give the fans something to cheer about.
Speaking after the game on the club's YouTube channel, manager Dan Brownlie was left frustrated after the disappointing loss. He said: “The moment we conceded it just felt like the tide turned too much of an instant and we need to get better at that.
“I feel like the first goal really undone us because it allowed them to sit back and soak up the pressure and then pitch their moments.”
Speaking about current injury updates, Brownlie said: “The intention was to get Scott Armsworth on today, as he’s a massive player for us, but the back four across preseason have done really well so it wasn’t a case of a knee-jerk reaction to get Scott in.”
The loss leaves Basingstoke Town in 16th with the first Hampshire derby of the season taking place on Wednesday night.
