A VETERAN BMX rider from Basingstoke has made a triumphant return to the sport.
Basingstoke's very own Sarah Jane Nichols, a legendary BMX champion from the 1980s, has not just dusted off her old bike but soared to an inspiring podium finish at the British BMX championships held in Derby – where she won her first national title 40 years ago, when she was just 13.
Sarah, now 53, clinched the prestigious title back in 1983 and went on to have a glittering career.
The Bramley resident became a seven-time British, four-time European, and one-time World BMX champion, carving her name into the annals of the sport's history.

Sarah's love for the sport extended to the heady days of the 80s when BMX was a cultural phenomenon.
However, as the years rolled on, Sarah hung up her BMX boots in 1987. The sport she loved dearly took a backseat, and she shifted her focus to an equally impressive career in ice hockey.
Her journey led her to become a stalwart for the women's elite team in Guilford and eventually with Basingstoke Hyenas.
Over the next 35 years, she played for various teams, even representing England and Great Britain in her youth.
Yet, life had more adventures in store for Sarah.
As the Covid pandemic put her ice hockey career on ice, she found herself yearning for a new challenge.
It was also a period of introspection, while menopause was taking its toll on her.
But an undeterred Sarah had her spark reignited in 2022 when she was invited to Andover BMX club, where she showcased her vintage bike and shared tales of her glory days with the young riders.
The experience was transformative.
"I peddled around and thought, 'this is still really hard work.' I still enjoyed it, and it was still so fun," she said.
Encouraged by the warmth and support of the club members, Sarah embarked on her incredible journey back into BMX racing.
The sport had evolved immensely since her retirement, with tracks now featuring more jumps and challenges than ever before.
With sheer determination and unwavering commitment, Sarah participated in her first season back on the BMX circuit.
Her goal was set – qualify for the British BMX championships and secure a podium spot. She didn't just meet her goal - she soared past it.

At 53, Sarah raced in the 30+ female category, facing formidable opponents with over 15 years of racing experience.
Despite the fierce competition, she secured a remarkable third-place finish at the British BMX Championships, an accomplishment that left her beaming with pride.
"Third place is amazing, but there's still room for improvement," said Sarah, who works at Sherfield School.
Her next target is to compete at the World BMX championship at the Rock Hill BMX Supercross Track in the United States and at the European BMX championship in Verona, Italy.
