VICTIMS of a major fire in Basingstoke are set to find out more about what happened at a public event organised by the fire service.

The fire in Oakridge Road destroyed or damaged the homes of 24 families when it ripped through an apartment block at 3pm on May 27.

Residents and those living in similar buildings have since raised concerns about how the fire spread so quickly.

Now, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) is preparing to give them an update on the investigation into the fire at a public event.

Details of the public drop-in event are yet to be confirmed, however, it is understood that the fire service will provide further details about an independent investigation into the incident, conducted by Kent Fire and Rescue Service.

The focus of the investigation is on the construction of the flats and similar flats in the area, due to the speed at which the fire spread.

A further review of the fire includes looking at the initial cause, operational tactics, pre-planning, deployment, fire safety enforcement and an accident review regarding three firefighters who were injured while tackling the blaze.

According to Basingstoke MP Maria Miller, who called for the findings to be “published in full”, the review is set to be made public “soon” along with the independent fire investigation on the structure of the buildings.

She said: “Residents have contacted me with their concern about the speed at which the fire spread, the implications for evacuation policies and whether works will be needed in similar nearby blocks.

“To support all affected residents, HIWFRS have agreed to hold a public drop-in event for Oakridge residents to hear more about the fire service independent investigation and how those findings will be shared with residents in the affected block and similar blocks nearby.”

She said Vivid Housing Association, which owns the flats, has been updating residents regularly.

The drop-in event will give them a chance to talk about their concerns, hear about the progress of the fire investigation, and ask questions of fire experts.

Dame Maria added: “Transparency is paramount when it comes to safety.”
