A BLOCK of toilets at a shopping centre in Basingstoke have been demolished and pop-ups could be able to use the space.

The toilets at Chineham Shopping Centre were closed in 2016 due to their poor condition and anti-social behaviour, and now they have been torn down.

The work started at the end of July as planning permission granted by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council in 2020 was due to expire last month.

Supermarket Income REIT (SUPR), which acquired the shopping centre in July 2022, has said that in the short term, the area will be made ‘safe and presentable’, but it is also considering pop-up opportunities.

A statement from SUPR said: “The 2020 planning permission for the enhancement of Chineham District Centre was due to expire in August 2023. SUPR has implemented this permission by demolishing the defunct toilets at the centre, which were closed in 2016 due to their poor condition and the anti-social behaviour they were attracting. In the short term the area will be made safe and presentable, and toilets are available at Tesco and Marks & Spencer.

“We are considering meanwhile uses and pop-up opportunities for the space vacated by the demolished toilets. For any enquiries on this, please contact the letting agent Tom Clancy from Curchod & Co on 01256 462222.

“SUPR is excited by the opportunity to further enhance the established and successful Chineham District Centre, and implementing the planning permission via the removal of these out of use facilities will enable future delivery of several elements of the consent.

“We are continuing to review how the centre’s enhancements can be delivered in the long term and look forward to sharing more about this with you in due course.”
