LONG-serving Basingstoke Town Football Club striker Sam Argent has made the decision to step away from football.
In an announcement made by Basingstoke FC on Thursday, September 28, Argent, known as ‘Super Sammy Argent’ by fans, feels like it is the ‘right time’ to step away from football.
Argent was born in Basingstoke and played for the club for many years. He notably scored five goals in two matches against Dunstable and Tiverton in 2018.

He said: “It’s not been an easy decision but I feel it’s the right time for me. I’ve loved being out there with the fans, the management and this special, special group of lads.
“What we achieved last season was incredible and I’m so proud to have played a part in such a historic moment for this great club.
"But now, I’m excited to see what this group can go on and achieve – I’ll be cheering them on from behind the lines. A big thank you to everyone who has contributed to my time here; it’s been such a big part of my life and I’ve loved it."

Manager Dan Brownlie thanks him for his service to the club calling him “a great player and a great man".
He added: “I’ve been lucky enough to work with Arg across two different clubs. He’s up there with the best I’ve worked with. An immense talent with a steeliness to his play.
“His abilities in the air are quite remarkable and became pivotal in our success last season especially when defending set pieces. He scored some important goals during our treble win – the header versus Leatherhead and even earlier in the season in a narrow win versus SCR.
“We’ll be gutted to lose him both on and off the pitch, but I know his fondness for the club and this group of players won’t have him too far away.
“I’ve no doubt the messages will pour in from all corners of the club, but I’m confident I can speak on behalf of everyone when I say a huge thank you to all that he’s contributed to. A great player and a great man.”
