STORM Ciarán is sweeping through Hampshire, creating treacherous conditions on the roads.
A motoring expert has revealed a vital telltale sign that could save drivers from serious injury during the storm.
Across the South, thousands have been left without power and properties have suffered structural damage, as transport systems grind to a halt in some areas.
High winds bring the risk of broken and uprooted trees blocking major routes.
If you do have to venture out in the harsh conditions, there is one little-known clue that could save your life by giving you an early warning that trouble is around the corner - lots of twigs and leaves in the road.

Graham Conway from Select Car Leasing explained: "Storms can be a nightmare for everyone, but particularly motorists caught outside in the worst of the conditions.
"Driving in torrential rain and high winds poses plenty of problems and is therefore best avoided if at all possible.
"If you do have to venture out, one of the main things to be aware of is the danger of felled trees or large branches blocking roads.
"This is more of a problem in rural areas, where the prospect of suddenly bearing down on some fallen timber on a narrow country lane could lead to a serious accident.
"But if you keep an eye out for a sudden influx of twigs and leaves in the road, this will give you an early indication that high winds have caused significant damage in the area.
"Being completely focused is a must when driving at any time, but in adverse weather conditions it's even more important and any little clues such as these can help you stay safe."
While Storm Ciarán continues to batter the country throughout the day, 'motoring expert' Graham Conway gives this life saving tip: "While many people will hunker down at home to escape the worst of the weather, this is not always possible due to work and family commitments.
"So this tip could prove invaluable if you do have to venture out during Storm Ciaran.
"Some other good advice for driving during a storm is to keep you distance from other vehicles and beware of potential wind tunnels - especially between buildings - that could blow you off course as you pass them."
