A BASINGSTOKE secondary school will stay closed following a gas leak.

Cranbourne School has sent a letter to parents confirming that the school will stay closed on Tuesday, January 2 - which was supposed to be the first day back for pupils - after a gas leak was discovered earlier this month.

The school was closed following the discovery on Thursday, December 14, with the school subsequently breaking up for the Christmas holidays on Friday, December 15.

The notice of the continued closure was sent to parents and put on the school's website on Thursday, December 28, with no confirmation if students will be returning on Wednesday, January 3.

A Year 11 parents' evening due to be held on Wednesday, January 3 has already been postponed.

The letter from headteacher Sarah Conlon said: "Following on from my letter sent on December 14, the gas leak in school has still not been fixed and we continue to wait for contractors to reinstate the gas.

"This is extremely disappointing and not the news I hoped to give you, I have therefore had to make the decision to shut the school on Tuesday, January 2 2024 as there will be no heating, hot water or cooking facilities.

"At this time, I do not know whether the issue will be fixed on January 2 so we will be posting updates on our website and social media. There will be work uploaded on Show My Homework for students to complete if they are able to at home.

"As a precaution, we are postponing the Year 11 parents evening due to be held on Wednesday, January 3. Further details will be shared about this event when we know more."

Cranbourne School and Hampshire County Council have been contacted for comments.
