AN EXHIBITION celebrating the intricacies of handweaving is to be displayed at Whitchurch Silk Mill.
Crossing the warp – thread by thread will be on display at the silk mill from Saturday, January 13 to Sunday, March 17.
The exhibition, by the Seven Sisters Handweavers, celebrates handweaving as a complement to the weaving looms used at Whitchurch.
The group weaves useful and decorative items including furnishings, window shades, clothing, and art weaving, and consists of six handweavers; Sarah Affleck, Sandra Gruescu, Sue Hopkinson, Sue Malvern, Kirsty Odds and Stephanie Pfister.
Seven Sisters Handweavers use a range of yarns in their pieces, including silk and cotton recycled from surplus industrial waste, as well as linen and wool.
Themes in the exhibition include the rhythm, technique, and artistry of handwoven silk cloth along with exploring travelling home and landscape, represented through plaited twill and a range of colours.
Patterns typical for 18th-century cotton handweaving can also be seen in the display, superimposed with modern designs in bright colours.
