Two men in their 20s have been arrested after a car chase around Basingstoke on Friday afternoon.

Police received reports that a silver Skoda Superb was stolen from Carpenters Down, Basingstoke at 12.27pm on Friday, January 12.

Officers spotted the vehicle travelling south on the A339 Kingsclere Road, but the driver failed to stop and a pursuit commenced.

Police pursued the vehicle along the A339, Rooksdown Lane, Nightingale Gardens, Florence Way, Gillies Drive, Rooksdown Avenue, Rooksdown roundabout, Roman Road, Wellington Terrace and Ashwood Way before the car was abandoned in Winklebury Way.

Members of the public waved police in the direction of two males who escaped on foot.

Police subsequently seized the stolen car, and two males from Basingstoke, aged 20 and 27, were arrested nearby on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving without a licence, driving with no insurance, and drug driving.

They have since been released under investigation.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: "We would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the pursuit, and also the members of the public that waved down police at the end of the pursuit so we can take their statements.
