BASINGSTOKE Town returned to winning ways with a brilliant away victory against Hanwell Town despite the home side taking a lead in the first minute.
Billy Upton and Bradley Wilson scored a goal each in the second half to hand 'Stoke a win at the Powerday Stadium in London.
Jacob Bancroft scored the only goal for Hanwell Town in the first minute of the game.
This was 'Stoke's first win in more than two months and 13 games.
After Bancroft gave an early lead for the home side, 'Stoke came back into the game strongly.
They had a couple of golden opportunities with Upton's header and Dan Rowe's effort going just wide.
George Reid's volley also went narrowly over the bar in the 37th minute.
'Stoke's attempts finally came to success as Upton volleyed the ball into the back of the net just three minutes after the start of the second half.
The away side then took the lead in the 51st minute when Liam Ferdinand squared the ball to Wilson who guided it to the back post.
They then held on to the game despite Hanwell trying to score one back until the final whistle.
'Stoke are currently 13th in the table with 31 points from 28 games.
After the game, gaffer Dan Brownlie said it was a tough game.
"Hanwell certainly made us work hard for it. We made ourselves work hard for it with a goal in less than a minute. That was disappointing. Moments like that can cloud the judgment on performances. So, I went into the half-time semi-disappointed with the way we played. We weren't disastrous but it was a big moment that we let ourselves down.
“However the second half we asked for a bit of steadiness, more aggression, particularly in the middle, and a bit more ball retention at the top. My God did they do it? It was a fabulous second-half performance. We played about 11 minutes of injury time. It almost makes it perfect because we had to work hard for it. I'm really pleased. It was long overdue. It was a fantastic win and a really gritty performance.”
‘Stoke’s next game is against Tiverton Town on Saturday, January 20.
