A TEENAGE boy has been arrested for a knife offence after a Section 60 order was implemented in response to a serious assault in Basingstoke.

A Section 60 order, which gives officers additional stop and search powers, was put in place in the Buckskin and South Ham areas of the town over the weekend.

Officers stopped and searched 25 people in the specific area between 8pm on Friday, January 2, and 8pm on Sunday, January 4.

A 16-year-old boy from Basingstoke was arrested on suspicion of possessing a knife blade in a public place after he was stopped on Wrekin Close.

He has been bailed with conditions until February 7.

Two teenage boys, aged 17 and 16 from Basingstoke, were stopped and cannabis was found.  

The 17-year-old boy was given a community resolution, while the 16-year-old will attend a police station at a later date.

It follows an incident on Tuesday 30 January, when a man in his 40s was seriously assaulted near Buckskin Lane. He suffered serious facial and head injuries.

Since it was reported to police, officers have been carrying out a number of enquiries and a man has been charged.

Amman Majid, 18, of Chivers Close, Basingstoke, was charged with attempt murder and possessing a knife blade / sharp pointed article in a public place.

He appeared at Southampton Magistrates Court on Saturday, February 3, and was remanded into custody. He is due to appear at Winchester Crown Court on Wednesday, March 6.

A 21-year-old man from Basingstoke was also arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and robbery. He has been bailed with conditions until Thursday, May 2.

Chief Inspector Scott Johnson, district commander for Basingstoke, said: “We know and fully appreciate how worrying violent incidents of this nature are to local residents, which is why you may have seen an increased police presence over the weekend.

“Section 60 is an emergency power and can be put in place quickly to prevent incidents of serious violence. We use these emergency powers because we want to take every opportunity to prevent serious violence.

“Officers have been in the area since this incident was reported to us. They have been conducting a number of enquiries, including forensic work, reviewing CCTV and going door to door speaking to people who live in the area.
