BASINGSTOKE Labour's parliamentary candidate Luke Murphy is 'committed' to ensuring that the ice rink remains in Basingstoke amidst concerns.
As previously reported, plans for the rink's much-anticipated upgrade, initially announced in April 2023, have come to a standstill, reportedly because of a disagreement between leaseholder Standard Securities and Planet Ice, the rink's operator.
Mr Murphy visited the ice rink on the weekend of March 2, to speak to users of the facility, including campaigners, junior ice hockey players, and coaches, about its ongoing issues.

Mr Murphy says he endorses the 'Keep Ice in Basingstoke' campaign, which calls for the rink to be brought up to standard, to ensure that the facility remains usable for skaters, as well as protect it from potential closure.
Mr Murphy said: "The Basingstoke Ice Rink is more than just a facility; it's a community hub that fosters talent, encourages physical activity, and brings people together.
"It's crucial that we protect and enhance our much-loved ice rink, ensuring it continues to serve and enrich our community.
"Investing in facilities like the ice rink is investing in our town's future. We must work together to find sustainable solutions that preserve our heritage and promote wellbeing for all.
"Together, we can ensure that Basingstoke Ice Rink remains a vibrant part of our community for generations to come. I am committed to this cause and urge everyone to support the 'Keep Ice in Basingstoke' campaign.”

Chair of Basingstoke Junior Bison, Stewart Tempest, says that it would be a 'welcome change to have an MP who actively supports the rink'.
He added: "It was great to meet Luke down at the rink today and see him spending some time chatting with skaters and parents on and off the ice, to hear why the ice rink is so important to so many people in our town.
“It’s also good to see he's already out and about finding out what makes Basingstoke tick. We wish him well in the General Election when it happens, it would be a welcome change to have an MP who actively supports the rink in Basingstoke.”
