A NEW footbridge is to be built at Eastrop Park to replace the current 50-year-old structure.

Visitors to Eastrop Park in Basingstoke will soon benefit from a new footbridge as Hampshire County Council has confirmed plans to replace the current wooden structure.

Work is expected to start in early May and is due to take around four weeks to complete.

Cllr Nick Adams-King, the county council’s cabinet lead member for universal services, said: "The footbridge at Eastrop Park is now more than 50-years-old, and is showing significant signs of decay.

"I am pleased to confirm work will soon begin to replace it with a stronger steel and timber structure. This will extend the life of the bridge and ensure it is safe for use by everyone who enjoys this popular green recreation space in Basingstoke."

The current 9.5metre-long and 3.2-metre-wide bridge will be demolished, and new foundations will be constructed.

The bridge crossing will be temporarily closed for the duration of the construction work. Eastrop Park will remain open and accessible to all during the works, with alternative access into the park available adjacent to the boating lake.
