TWO Basingstoke boys have achieved fourth place at the national tennis championships held recently in Nottingham.

William Durman and Scott Yates were part of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight tennis team that qualified for the competition after a nail-biting tiebreaker victory over Sussex on their home turf.

William is from Sherfield School and Scott plays for Manydown Tennis.

The Hampshire squad battled valiantly at the Nottingham Tennis Centre, finishing second in their group.

They secured convincing wins against Surrey and Suffolk but fell short against Buckinghamshire.

After the group matches, Surrey, Hampshire and Buckinghamshire ended with two wins each, forcing a tiebreaker based on matches won.

Unfortunately, Hampshire fell just one point short of Surrey, who proceeded to the finals and ultimately clinched the championship title.

Despite the narrow defeat, Hampshire's impressive run throughout the competition has earned them automatic qualification for next year's national finals.

With a year of experience and determination under their belt, the team has set sights on claiming the national title next time around.
