Basingstoke & North Hants have their first ECB Southern Premier Division win points on the board after their seven-wicket victory at the Jubilee Ground nailed Alton firmly to the foot of the table, writes Mike Vimpany.
The Brewers faced a third successive defeat when Basingstoke bowled them out for 142, a target the visitors chased down with Ash Neal hitting an unbeaten 47.
Three blows with the new ball by Matt Donaldson (3-27) put Alton on the back foot and with half the side back in the pavilion for 58 a competitive total seemed improbable.
Sam Ruffell (25) and Tom South (34) rallied but having reached 124, Alton promptly lost three wickets for four runs - Dubs Wood (3-30) and Ali Brown (2-25) prevailing - and needed Mark Heffernan's 23 not out to get them up to 142.
Basingstoke lost openers Matt Deadman and Alex Bovill cheaply, but Neal steadied the ship alongside George Metzger, who made a quick fire 26 and Wood 24 not out, the latter pair hitting nine boundaries between them.
