A lawn mower was behind the damage that forced a petrol station to close in Basingstoke. 

Emergency services were called to Worting Road in Basingstoke on Friday, May 31 at 12.55pm. 

Morrisons Petrol Station was evacuated after a report of a gas leak on the grass nearby. 

Morris Road was closed where it meets Ringway West and customers were not allowed near the petrol station.

Basingstoke Gazette: A fire service spokesperson said: "Firefighters were called to Worting Road in Basingstoke after a lawn mower damaged a gas main.

"Crews from Basingstoke, Hartley Wintney and Alton were alerted shortly before 1pm.

"The gas board were requested to attend, with police also on the scene to manage traffic as a nearby petrol station was evacuated.

"HIWFRS used air monitoring equipment before handing the incident over to gas engineers and leaving the scene shortly after 3pm." 

A police spokesperson said: "We were called by the fire service at 12.55pm to a report of a gas leak on a grass area near the petrol station on Worting Road.

"Officers are assisting with closing the road while a gas repair team attends the scene." 

It is understood that Morris Road remains closed.
