A CHARITY chair who lives with Parkinson's has completed a six-day, 592-mile cycle challenge.

Gary Shaughnessy, from Tadley, rolled into a heroes' welcome in Hastings after concluding the mammoth ride which begun at Hadrian's Wall.

The 58-year-old chair of trustees for Parkinson's UK, who last year received a CBE for services to business and charity, has to date amassed half a million pounds through various fundraising drives for his organisation and others.

Parkinson's, the world's fastest-growing neurological condition with no cure, afflicts about 153,000 UK residents, adding two more every hour.

The disease presents over 40 symptoms, including tremors, pain, and anxiety.

After the warm reception, attendees pivoted to nearby Barnaby's Lounge for a complimentary reception and Italian buffet provided by Rustico.

Gary, who also chairs the board of the Z Zurich Foundation, said: "So many people don’t know what Parkinson’s is, and the challenges I take on are all about raising awareness of the condition, and also feeling more in control of my Parkinson’s.”

"It was wonderful to be met by members of the Parkinson’s community today, as well as share experiences and encouragement. It has given me a much-needed incentive to keep up the challenges and fundraising.

"I hope that my challenges and determination to keep active will encourage others living with Parkinson’s to get active, and will also encourage people to donate towards research that could lead to a cure."

Ruth Wright, community fundraiser, South West, said: "We are incredibly grateful to Gary for all his fundraising efforts. Hadrian’s Wall to Hastings is one of the many challenges that Gary is taking on this year.

"We hope this fundraising challenge inspires you to get involved with Parkinson’s UK. There are lots of ways for you to get involved and support us - from volunteering at an event to campaigning for better services. Without the generosity of people like you, our work would not be possible."
